In a discussion of medieval literature and its often annoying tendency to copy all the things the rhetoric textbooks said to do, which was the fashion of the day, C. S. Lewis writes this:
[S]urely to be indulgent to mere fashion in other periods, and merciless to it in our own, is the first step we can make out of the prison of the Zeitgeist (The Allegory of Love, pp. 90-91).Â
